When Religion Gets Sick
by Wayne E. Oates

When Religion Gets Sick is a landmark work in pastoral care. It was originally published by Westminster Press in 1970, and continues to be a popular text for pastoral care and counseling. It is a study that is applicable for moving into the 21st century as it was for the 70's. Using the case history method he shows what happens when people get "religiously sick," and what the minister and church can do about it.

Dr. Oates defines "sick religion" as one that hinders the basic function of life, and answers such questions as: When does religion get sick? What kinds of experience result from sick religion? What can a minister and a church do for people who have such experiences? And can these experiences be predicted and prevented?
