Anxiety in
Christian Experience
by Wayne E. Oates
"Three lines of insight and discipline converge to
make the painful uneasiness of mind known as anxiety meaningful
both to the participating Christian and to his pastoral counselor," writes
Dr. Wayne Oates in the Preface to Anxiety in Christian
Experience. These are "the insights and disciplines
of the Biblical message, the findings of modern psychotherapists,
and the clinical experience of pastoral counselors. These
sources of understanding of the problem of anxiety bear witness
together to reinforce each other and separately to throw
light upon each other."
This book represents the effort to deal systematically with
the problem of anxiety in Christian experience.
In addressing
anxiety from the Christian perspective, Dr. Wayne Oates describes
both the threat and the creative opportunity that anxiety
presents in a way that was timely not only when this book
was originally published but for contemporary readers as
well. The complete text of the Westminster Press edition
is republished here by the Wayne E. Oates Institute as it
originally read. Please note that while the ideas expressed
remain relevant to today, the language, particularly with
regard to inclusive language, reflects the publishing practices
common to the era of its original publication.

Wayne Oates authored
58 books during his lifetime, many of which are recognized
as significant contributions to the literature in the fields
of psychology of religion, pastoral care, and pastoral
counseling. Several of these, including The Christian
Pastor, remain in print with the original publishers.
Many, however, have gone out of print. Through the Wayne
E. Oates Library Collection the Oates Institute is republishing the
out-of-print works so they will remain available to congregational
leaders and pastoral care and counseling practitioners.
