People
in Pain:
Guidelines for Pastoral Care
by Wayne E. Oates
and Charles E. Oates, MD
|
Millions
of persons experience chronic pain and this book joins father
and son--Wayne E. Oates, a renowned pastoral counselor, and
Charles E. Oates, a prominent neurologist-- to shape an informed
and compassionate approach for providing pastoral care to those
who experience chronic pain. The original Westminster Press
book jacket described this book as:
Especially
helpful for ministers, counselors, and students of pastoral
care, this book examines both the spiritual and physical dimensions
of pain. From the medical perspective, it offers a layperson's
guide to the anatomy and neurochemistry of pain, the most common
pain states and their causes, and the methods of treatment.
Diagrams, a glossary of medical terms, and a listing of medications
acquaint readers with unfamiliar terminology.
From
the vantage point of psychology, the authors look at the perception
of pain and the behaviors that result from physical discomfort.
They discuss positive ways to fashion a life that outwits,
outmaneuvers, and out-prays the power of pain to dominate life.
Finally, they consider the spiritual concerns of the pain victim,
emphasizing the pastor's role in helping individuals find in
their relationship to God a way of transcending pain and its
power to control their lives. (Westminster Press, 1985, cover)
Wayne Oates authored
58 books during his lifetime, many of which are recognized as
significant contributions to the literature in the fields of
psychology of religion, pastoral care, and pastoral counseling.
Several of these, including The Christian Pastor, remain
in print with the original publishers. Many, however, have gone
out of print. Through the Wayne E. Oates Library Collection the
Oates Institute is republishing the out-of-print works
so they will remain available to congregational leaders and pastoral
care and counseling practitioners.
