The
Revelation of God in
Human Suffering
by Wayne E. Oates
|
The chapters in this book are based on sermons delivered by
Dr. Wayne Oates, each reflecting on the revelation of God in
and through the context of a different aspect or type of human
suffering.
Jesus' ministry was addressed to suffering people: it was the
sick, in body or mind, who needed him as their physician. Over
and over again he stressed this aspect of his mission. By pointing
to his works of healing he implied to John that he was indeed
the Anointed One. When he sent out his disciples, it was specifically
to cure the sick and the spirit-possessed. When he delivered
the parable of the judging shepherd, he taught that people would
be rated according to how they had or had not ministered in practical
and physical ways to their suffering fellow human beings.
Christian values are latent
in suffering -- values, indeed, not to be experienced apart
from suffering which alone brings us into a knowledge of the
God "of all comfort."
This revelation of God in and through our suffering binds us
with all Christians in the fellowship of Christ's sufferings,
issues in a disciplined community, develops our spiritual maturity,
and relates us to one another on basically essential terms.
Wayne Oates authored
58 books during his lifetime, many of which are recognized
as significant contributions to the literature in the fields
of psychology of religion, pastoral care, and pastoral counseling.
Several of these, including The Christian Pastor,
remain in print with the original publishers. Many, however,
have gone out of print. Through the Wayne E. Oates Library
Collection the Oates Institute is republishing the
out-of-print works so they will remain available to congregational
leaders and pastoral care and counseling practitioners.
