Dr. Wayne E. Oates: A Living Legacy

JUNE 24, 1917 - OCTOBER 21, 1999

Dr. Wayne E. Oates

In memory of Dr. Oates

from Janie Behr

I admire and respect what Dr. Oates has done for our community. I never met him personally but could tell he was filled with compassion, empathy and a tremendous amount of love. He wasn't afraid to share who he was and what he stood for! He honored diversity and brought together many people in our community.

I am constantly looking for role models to help clarify and bring new ways of communicating peace.I have recently started working at a homeless shelter as an intern. It saddens me to see the attitude many people have about homelessness. Many of them suffer from mental illness and addictions. If they knew how to change their lives many of them would. Their needs are no different than ours, they have a need first for love, acceptance, and understanding, and then for shelter and clothing.

It takes men and women like Dr. Oates to give a voice to the oppressed. It takes alot of courage and good communication skills to speak out as Dr. Oates did in his life. I am grateful to have him as a role model in my life and will work hard to continue his dream for peace. Thank you Dr. Oates.
