Dr. Wayne E. Oates: A Living Legacy

JUNE 24, 1917 - OCTOBER 21, 1999

Dr. Wayne E. Oates

Remembrance
from Larry J. Austin, D.Min., ACPE Supervisor
and Jill A. Austin
Friends and former student

Several years ago when I worked in East Tennessee, Wayne came to Carson Newman College to speak to a local gathering. I encouraged our CPE students to call and see if we could get an invitation to the conference to hear Wayne. Carson Newman told Wayne about the request and our CPE program went to hear him. We had been told that we would eat lunch with Wayne at his request. We assumed that we would be with every other participant at a large room. Imagine our surprise when we met Wayne in the President's private dining room at Carson Newman. He spent almost two hours with my CPE students asking them what they had been learning in our CPE program.

When my wife and I were in Seminary we attended a conference where Wayne was speaking. I was working with Wayne in CPE and I introduced him to my wife, Jill. Several months later, Wayne saw Jill at a gathering and called her by name. She was incredulous and affirmed that Wayne could remember her name after all that time, having only met her one time before.
