Dr. Wayne E. Oates: A Living Legacy

JUNE 24, 1917 - OCTOBER 21, 1999

Dr. Wayne E. Oates

A loss to all pastoral carers
from Dr. Nalini Arles, Associate Professor
United Theological College, Bangalore, India

Greeting from India. Although I do not know Dr. Wayne Oates, his writings mean a lot to us in the third world. I teach Pastoral Care and Counselling at the United Theological college, a college known among WCC circles, as well as in the academic world, for its scholarship and for producing leaders to serve in WCC. I would like to express my condolence to his family.

I would like to say it is a great loss to all the carers. His contribution was of immense help to us in molding our understanding of pastoral care and counselling. He has widened our knowledge in integrating social sciences, especially psychology, into pastoral care. Thus enriching the field of pastoral care to understand human nature. He surely has touched us and enlightened us and challenged us to be better carers by giving us skills and theory.

I especially want to thank his family members for sharing such a precious one with of us. "Thank YOU very much folks."

I am positive that his light will shine through us with the help of God's grace. At this point I would say, I just thank God for his life...and to help all of us to emulate his example.
