Wayne E. Oates was my friend. He illustrated the good news by his own life, sharing his own story as well as the stories of the many persons whom he befriended. I once asked him if I could interview him for a history of Chaplaincy at the University of Louisville Hospital. I asked one question. He filled the rest of the hour with names and stories of the many friends who had profound influence on the development of Pastoral Care. I sat amazed while scrambling to make notes and remember all that was possible. Later I turned in a cassette tape to the Southern Seminary Library.
