The Oates Institute is pleased to introduce
Dr. Brooks R. Faulkner as the 2007 Wayne E. Oates Award Recipient. His
ministry, leadership, and personal service exemplify the
criteria of the Wayne E. Oates Award. Dr. Faulkner
is an accredited Compassion Fatigue specialist, a program
implemented after the 1996 Oklahoma City bombings and sanctioned
by the F.B.I. He is a trainer for military, industrial,
and institutional chaplains from around the world.
While earning two degrees from Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary, Dr. Faulkner was awarded fellowships
in Greek, Hebrew, and Old Testament. He holds his doctorate
from Vanderbilt, where he specialized in the area of “Finding
Support During Ministerial Crises.”
As an author of fifteen books, including Burnout
in Ministry, Stress in the Life of a Minister, Forced Termination, and
his most recent, Getting on Top of Your Work (2000),
Dr. Faulkner acknowledges Wayne Oates as one of his greatest
mentors. His writings demonstrate the influence of
Wayne E. Oates; for instance, in his book, Burnout
in Ministry Dr. Faulkner applies insights from Dr.
Oates’ Confessions
of a Workaholic.
Dr. Faulkner has served as a care giver
and counselor to hundreds of ministers who have attended
his seminars, read his books, and personally consulted with
him. His ministry has crossed theological and denominational
lines.
Brooks R. Faulkner has served as a pastor
or interim pastor in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Missouri. In
addition, to his pastoral role, he is the husband of Shirley
Anne, the father of one daughter and one son, and the grandfather
of two grandchildren.
Dr. Faulkner will speak on "Renewing Compassion
Boundaries" at the Annual
Gathering and Oates Award Dinner on Thursday, October
4, 2007 in Louisville, Kentucky. For more information
