Acknowledgements
I am indebted first of all to the many people in churches,
seminaries, and a medical school who have allowed me to glimpse
the pain and suffering underneath the characteristics that
make them troublesome to other people, especially in institutional
settings. They have taught me much that confirms Harry Stack
Sullivan's comment that all human beings are much more distinctly
alike than different and William James comment that we make
a great deal of fuss over what little difference there is among
people.
I am also indebted to The Alban Institute. Under the direction
of Editor-in-Chief Celia Allison Hahn, there people have given
me excellent critique and suggestions for making this a better
book than I alone could have made it.
I also express my appreciation of and esteem for Becky Timerding,
our computer specialist, for her kindness, patience, and expertiese
in translating and transforming this manuscript--from my long-hand
first draft through subsequent revisions to this finished document.
