Clergy, religious professionals, deacons, and other congregational leaders are often the first to be called when individuals and families suffer trauma or experience a crisis.  It is not only the religious professional that needs care giving skills, but also the lay person, the deacon, the elder, the small group leader, and other congregational leaders.  The Pastoral Care Specialist Certificate offered by the Wayne E. Oates Institute provides training in brief and supportive pastoral care and counseling that will strengthen the skills of religious professionals or lay leaders who give care to individuals and families within or outside of a congregational setting.

The next cohort group will begin in January 2010 and the deadline for those applications is December 1, 2009.  By utilizing the Oates Institute's Connected Learning methodology, this certificate program is available online and therefore, it is possible for individuals to participate from any location, and at a time that is personally convenient, as they have internet access.

To achieve this certificate, participants are required to actively participate in an online peer group and meet the continuing education requirements of each of the four core seminars (12 contact hours each) and the six-week practicum utilizing one’s placement in a ministry context. (A total of 72 contact hours.)

The four core seminars are:
•    Introduction to the Ministry of Pastoral Care  (12 contact hours)
•    Crisis Intervention and Pastoral Care  (12 contact hours)
•    Pastoral Care and Counseling with Grief and Loss  (12 contact hours)
•    Pastoral Assessment, Referral, and Supportive Counseling  (12 contact hours)

The six-week Pastoral Care Practicum (24 contact hours) follows the core seminars.

In addition to the opportunity to earn the Pastoral Care Specialist Certificate, this program has been approved by the National Board of Certified Counselors for continuing professional education credit.

The tuition for this certificate is $860 per student.  The nonrefundable application fee of $35 is applied to the tuition for those who enter the program. Due to recent contributions, we have a limited number of partial scholarships available for those with a financial need. You can find the scholarship application form online with the program application.

For additional information about scholarships or any other aspect of the PCS program you can call the Wayne E. Oates Institute (502-459-2370) and speak to one of the staff or email Vicki Hollon , This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
