Many of us laugh when talking about being a workaholic, but what exactly does it mean and is it a laughable condition? Wayne Oates coined the term “workaholic” in 1971 while counseling a man who was trying to accept that he was an alcoholic.  Seeking to connect with this person Dr. Oates said, “You know, I am a workaholic.” The term workaholic spread like wildfire because the experience was already known, we just needed a name for it.  The word "workaholic" found its way to the dictionary soon after Wayne published his book, Confessions of a Workaholic. As defined by Dr. Oates in this seminal book, a workaholic "is a person whose chronic over-involvement with work disturbs personal health and happiness and interferes with the establishment of wholesome relationships.”

In addition to helping The Academy develop its online campus as a place for peer interaction and access to resources, the Oates Institute will collaborate with the Academy to develop a certificate program that will support and inspire the young preacher in his or her vocation.
