The Caregiver's Mental Health

SELF STUDY LEARNING MODULE

In the process of giving care to others, care givers often overlook tending to their own self-care. Through peer dialogue around three presentations on care giver's mental health, this seminar provides an opportunity to reflect on self-care and to explore approaches for staying mentally healthy as a care giver.

Presentations:

  • "The Minister's Mental Health During Crises: Dealing with Disorientation When You Cannot See"
    by Charles Chandler, D.Min.

  • "Casualties of Sadness"
    by James A. Hyde, Ph.D., and John J. Schwab, M.D.

  • "The Strength to be Human: A Theology of Mental Health"
    by John Swinton, Ph.D.

Learning Objectives:

    Following this learning module one should be able to:
  1. Define mental health.
  2. Identify their own spiritual/theological perspectives regarding human dignity, values, and mental health.
  3. Assess their own mental health status in light of their definition of mental health.
  4. Practice self-differentiation and avoidance of triangulation as skills for self-care in a professional context.
  5. Recognize systems thinking as a practice of self-care.

  • Certified Counselors and Social Workers (NBCC Approved)
  • Continuing Chaplaincy Education (CCEs)
  • Integrative Care CEUs (WEOI)
    CEU Requirements:
  1. Read through each of the presentations listed above.

  2. Reflect on each in light of your own experience and context.

  3. Write a 300-500 word summary of this self-reflection for each presentation responding to two of the following questions:
    a) From your professional perspective, what are the most relevant issues addressed in this presentation?
    b) Do you agree with this presenter’s perspective? Please use your professional experience to document why you do or do not agree.
    c) Discuss ways that you might implement the ideas in this presentation within your professional setting.
    d) Discuss how you might collaborate with professionals from fields other than your own, to address the issues discussed in this presentation?

  4. Submit the CEU application with the written reflections.
