Encountering Depression and Anxiety in Ministry
12.0 contact hours / Presenter: Vicki Hollon, D.Min.

Religious leaders are not immune to depression and anxiety; however, it may be more difficult for religious leaders to admit to themselves or others that they suffer from either. This seminar is not only for the direct benefit of the religious leaders, it is also for those they serve.  It is designed to help ministers recognize symptoms of clinical depression and anxiety in order to more wisely give care to others and make appropriate referrals as needed.

Ministry to Families Living with Mental Illness
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator: Rose Ann Briotte, M.Div.

One in five people in the United States have or will have mental illness sometime in their lives. While those with mental illness frequently find the treatment and support they need, the impact of mental illness on the family system is often overlooked. This seminar provides participants the opportunity to explore the effects that a mental illness has on other members of the family, the family system, and close friends by reflecting on presented material in light of their own experience and context. Through this process the group benefits by learning from one another as well as from the presentations.

In this process we will focus conversation on the search for God in the digital cultural by looking at theological questions that have emerged from the postmodern matrix.

The Power to Bless
12.0 contact hours / Presenter: Chris Hammon, D.Min.

"The blessed child is one who is affirmed and loved by those responsible for the child's care, usually the parents," writes Dr. Myron Madden in his book, The Power to Bless. "But no child seems to get enough blessing to last a lifetime. As we move through adolescence and into adulthood, we have the need for affirmation beyond the family."

Through peer dialogue reflecting on writings by Dr. Myron Madden (The Power To Bless) and three popular films, seminar participants will reflect on the meaning of blessing. We will also explore the interaction between parents and children in the giving and receiving of blessing along with the giving and receiving of blessing outside the family.

    WEOI members free / non-member $60
    (limited to 12 participants)

When Children Suffer:
Care for Children and Families Experiencing Violence

12.0 contact hours / Presenter: Kathy Manis Findley, M.Div.

"Examination, inquiry, and analysis reveal that the depth of the injury to the psyche of a survivor of intimate violence rests squarely on relationship," wrote Kathy Manis Findley, director of Safe Places.  She goes on to explain, "When relationship is violated, a person is left vulnerable and susceptible to the onslaught of physical and mental illness and the child experiences developmental challenges."   Early recognition of the violence expands a child's safety net and enables intervention that may prevent more devastating consequences.
