Encountering Depression and Anxiety in Ministry
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator: Anne Windus, Ph.D.

Religious leaders are not immune to depression and anxiety; however, it may be more difficult for religious leaders to admit to themselves or others that they suffer from either. This seminar is not only for the direct benefit of the religious leaders, it is also for those they serve.  It is designed to help ministers recognize symptoms of clinical depression and anxiety in order to more wisely give care to others and make appropriate referrals as needed.

    WEOI members free / non-member $60
    (limited to 12 participants)

Fighting the Tiger: The Psychological and
Spiritual Effects of Traumatic Stress

12.0 contact hours / Facilitators: David Fair, Ph.D., B.C.E.T.S.; Chrys Parker, J.D.; and Barry Sharp, MSHP, CHES

Modern day technology has placed wars, hurricanes, and sexual assaults in our living rooms. What used to be the unthinkable happens on a daily basis, leaving a path of psychological and spiritual trauma in its wake.   Clergy members must deal with these traumas spilling over into church, hospital, and counseling settings. In this seminar experts in the areas of trauma stemming from natural disaster, sexual assault, and military deployment, guide ministers through a process of becoming aware of traumatic stress and helping to facilitate the emotional and spiritual healing.

    WEOI members free / non-member $60
    (limited to 12 participants)

Hope in Conflict
12.0 contact hours
/ Presenter: David Sawyer, Ph.D.

The seminar introduces a new approach to conflict as a hopeful sign of God's transforming mercy for a congregation. Using case studies from his new book, David Sawyer will introduce participants to the three keys that help unlock the deep mystery of congregational conflict: looking at structures, listening to stories, and learning from symptoms.

    WEOI members free / non-member $60
    (limited to 12 participants)

Ministry to an Aging Society
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator: Martha Rogers, M.Div.

Whether in the congregational, healthcare, or community setting, numerous aging issues that need to be proactively addressed are going unconsidered. In addition, the challenges are exacerbated by a societal ambivalence that in general ignores some of the deeper issues of self-esteem, meaning, and sense of purpose experienced in the aging process. The primary goal for this seminar is to provide a constructive and integrated format for addressing some of the spiritual, mental, and physical health issues of Senior Adults as they encounter new challenges in the aging process.
When Religion Gets Sick --
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator: Vern Farnum, D.Min., BCC
When Relgion Gets Sick book cover

In When Religion Gets Sick, widely regarded as one of the classics written by Dr. Wayne Oates, "sick religion" is defined as one that "hinders the basic functions of life." In this book he uses a case history method for exploring religious pathology and addressing such questions as:

    • When does religion get sick?
    • What kinds of experiences result from sick religion?
    • How can spiritual caregivers help people who have such experiences?

Through interdisciplinary, reflective peer group dialogue, participants in this seminar will review several chapters from this book and reflect on the meaning and consequences of "sick religion" in light of their own experience and context.

WEOI members free / non-member $60
