Care
of Troublesome People
12.0
contact hours / Facilitator: TBA
Learn
how to approach troubled and troublesome
people in your congregation in ways that
are not dismissive but are caring, affirming,
and grounded in God's grace. This seminar
is a study of Dr. Wayne Oates' book, The
Care of Troublesome People. Dr. Oates
combines family systems theory, insightful
analysis of five types of behavior that often
create conflict in churches, and biblically
based approaches for dealing with such behavior
in this practical guide for pastoral care
givers.
Hope
as a Dynamic for Healing
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator: Cindy McNutt-Kaestner
What
role does the dynamic of hope play in one's healing
and overall health and well-being? This question
continues to take on more meaning as health care
approaches become more integrated and holistic. This
seminar offers participants the opportunity to explore
the role of hope, future stories, and the creation
of narratives of hope.

Hope
in Conflict
12.0 contact hours / Presenter: David Sawyer,
Ph.D.
The
seminar introduces a new approach to conflict as
a hopeful sign of God's transforming mercy for a
congregation. Using case studies from his new book,
David Sawyer will introduce participants to the three
keys that help unlock the deep mystery of congregational
conflict: looking at structures, listening to stories,
and learning from symptoms.

Integrating
Spirituality and Health -- 6
weeks
September 11-October 20 / 24.0
contact hours /
Facilitator:
Carl Aiken
As
society is recognizing the fragmentation
of care for the body, mind, spirit, and soul,
there is increased recognition of the need
to integrate spirituality as an important
dimension of health and healing. Such an
integrative approach, as Carl Middleton writes, "is
comprehensive, collaborative, personalized,
and based on a multi-dimensional view of
the patient." Through
interdisciplinary, peer reflective dialogue
around three key presentations participants
will explore this holistic focus.
WEOI

(limited to 12 participants)
Ministry
to an Aging Society
12.0 contact hours / Facilitator:
Martha Rogers, M.Div.
Whether
in the congregational, healthcare, or community
setting, numerous aging issues that need
to be proactively addressed are going unconsidered.
In addition, the challenges are exacerbated
by a societal ambivalence that in general
ignores some of the deeper issues of self-esteem,
meaning, and sense of purpose experienced
in the aging process. The primary goal for
this seminar is to provide a constructive
and integrated format for addressing some
of the spiritual, mental, and physical health
issues of Senior Adults as they encounter
new challenges in the aging process.
Spiritual
Assessment: It's a SNAP
12.0 contact hours / Presenter:
Larry Austin, D.Min.
Performing spiritual
assessments is part of the daily routine for chaplains and
the search for more efficient approaches that can be utilized
by multiple disciplines is ongoing. Dr. Larry Austin has
developed an approach to spiritual assessment that is a SNAP.
The Spiritual Narrative Assessment Process is an advanced
approach to spiritual assessment in medical treatment. The
method approach of the SNAP system will require students
to be aware of the basic formats of the spiritual screen,
spiritual history, and spiritual assessment. With the understanding
of basic concepts SNAP will allow the user to do basic screens
and as the user's proficiency with the system becomes more
comfortable, progress to more advanced and detailed assessments,
including outcomes will be possible.
