Care at the End of Life

September 8-26, 2008
Facilitator: Martha Rutland, D.Min.

12.0 contact hours

In the care of persons dealing with end of life issues we are often sought out to help patients, family members, and colleagues understand the spiritual and ethical values related to:

  • Hope when there is no cure
  • Personal autonomy and human dignity at the end of life
  • Management of pain and suffering

Through interdisciplinary, reflective peer group email discussion, participants in this seminar will identify issues of concern around the theological and ethical dimensions of health care related to the end of life in light of their own experience and context. Through this process the group benefits by learning from one another as well as from the presentations.

Presentations (one per week):

  • "Aging and Human Dignity: The Future of Autonomy"
by Dr. Paul Simmons from the University of Louisville's Department of Family Medicine
  • "Pain, Suffering, and the Ends of Medicine" by Dr. Paul Simmons from the University of Louisville's Department of Family Medicine
  • "Hope and Healing in Hospice" by Dr. Jim England from Hospice of Louisville.
Learning Objectives:

Following this seminar, participants should be able to:

  1. Recognize the relationship between one's spiritual and moral values and healthcare decisions at the end of life.
  2. Clarify personal spiritual/theological perspectives regarding human dignity and decisional capacity.
  3. Identify ways to facilitate communication and collaboration between physicians, nurses, clergy, patients, and family members.
  4. Discuss issues related to: pain management, the meaning of human suffering, the purpose of medicine, and the role of hope.
  5. Distinguish between healing and curing.
