Finding God in the Multiplex:
A Lenten Film Festival

February 4-22, 2008
Presenter: Daniel Kroger, D.Min.

12.0 contact hours

All of us have probably had the experience of going to a movie at the local multiplex drawn by the review in the local paper which mentioned something of interest.  We go and are suddenly struck by either the whole movie or perhaps just a scene.  We are so moved perhaps because those things have touched on something in our faith life that we never expected.  As an example, we might cite the dialogue of the two slaves over the bible pictures in Amistad. Or the scene of the mass baptism in O Brother, Where art Thou?

Perhaps we may have wanted to share this experience and talk about it with others.  A Faith in Film festival is a perfect place to start, and the season of Lent is a great time to do it ... virtual popcorn included!

This three week seminar is an online film festival where participants will be watching three films, which may either be rented or purchased, and discussing them through an email discussion group along with presentations on the films. The films to watch for the seminar are: Chocolat, Babette's Feast, and Hotel Rwanda.

As Dr. Bill Thomason recently commented in another on-line seminar: “We do not generally expect secular movies made for commercial purposes to be theologically significant…(however) any well-made film about a subject of genuine human concern may be worth our attention…In taking serious films seriously, we come to exemplify those who Jesus said have ‘eyes to see and ears to hear.’”
